Magical Young Princess Fairy In A Forrest Uses Powers To Make Leaves Dance In The Wind With A Hand Gesture - Herald Of Autumn - Fantasy Fashion Photography by Graham Short

Herald Of Autumn: The Wind Seer

Herald Of Autumn began as an idea I had for a single image, one in which was depicted a magical creature who every Autumn emerged from the leaf litter of the forest and conjured up a vortex that made the leaves swirl in a torrent around herself.
Inspired by the beautiful and surreal fashion work of Miss Aniela, I proposed the idea to Joanne Elliot and her dancer/model daughter Hannah Elliot and we began work on prescribing a design for a dress and also brought on board Carole Paul of La Sweet Boutique to design accessories & floristry. Meggan George of Studio 2000 provided makeup and hair.
I located a brilliant spot in Houghall Woods which had a huge sloped woodland background and a pre-made lounger built against existing trees and disguised with ferns and leaf litter. The forest floor was covered in rich autumnal leaves and a partially felled tree had made a crossbar like structure between tree trunks, providing a natural frame for our scene.
Using a small set of steps I was able to elevate Hannah into the air and hide the steps with the super long overskirt Joanne had made. This also was able to stretch out across the ground allowing us to create the illusion that Hannah was emerging and growing out from the forest floor.
I directed Joanne and Carole to grab hand fulls of leaves and throw them into the air for me to capture on camera.
In post processing the bulk of the work was selecting, isolating and duplicating thousands of leaves onto their own layer in Photoshop. This then allowed me to selectively add motion blur and position groups of leaves to create the vortex effect, conjured by Hannah's gesture into the air.
